George Clinton Sues Universal Music Group Over $1.1 Million in Frozen Royalties

George Clinton has filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group, alleging that the label has frozen over $1.1 million in royalties from his music catalog for more than three years. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Detroit, claims that UMG withheld all royalties from at least 12 accounts related to Clinton, including music from Parliament, Clijo Productions, and his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The dispute stems from a previous copyright battle involving the estate of Bernie Worrell, a late P-Funk keyboardist, which Clinton won in 2025. Despite UMG being dismissed from that case in 2023, Clinton argues that the label continues to withhold royalties based on that lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges that UMG's actions constitute a breach of contract, as the label is withholding royalties based on a third-party lawsuit in which UMG is not involved and faces no liability. The complaint highlights specific amounts owed to Clinton, with one Parliament account showing nearly $1 million due, a Clinton/Clijo Productions account holding over $99,000, and a Red Hot Chili Peppers-related account showing $29,543.22. Clinton's legal team asserts that the royalties from the Red Hot Chili Peppers have no connection to the Worrell case.

This legal battle is part of a larger ongoing dispute over George Clinton's music rights, spanning several decades. Clinton, a key figure in shaping modern funk through Parliament-Funkadelic, has had a significant influence on genres like hip-hop and G-funk, inspiring artists from Dr. Dre to Kendrick Lamar. Recognized for his contributions, Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2025.

In his lawsuit, George Clinton is seeking damages exceeding $1.1 million, the release of all withheld royalties, a comprehensive financial audit, an injunction to prevent further withholding, and reimbursement for legal fees. Universal Music Group has not issued a statement regarding the lawsuit at this time.
