Blind Filmmaker Bahman Yazdan Panah Shines at Cannes: Navigating Challenges and Advocating for Inclusive Cinema

Bahman Yazdan Panah, a blind independent filmmaker, navigates the bustling Cannes Film Festival with the help of his guide dog Tess and assistant Elnour Torabi. Tess not only assists him in maneuvering through the crowds but also serves as a conversation starter, allowing Yazdan Panah to introduce himself and his latest project, a documentary titled Marie-Renée, which follows a blind woman's efforts to rebuild a school for visually impaired children in Gabon, Africa.
Yazdan Panah's journey as a filmmaker began with his debut feature, Out Of Frame, where he documented his hitchhiking adventures through Europe despite his blindness. This bold move was a personal challenge for him, as he aimed to showcase his mobility and determination after losing his sight. His background as a marketing and communications consultant in Iran led him to Paris as a political refugee, where he reunited with a childhood friend who documented his journey in the film Bahman.
Despite facing challenges and skepticism from potential investors due to his blindness, Yazdan Panah is determined to continue his filmmaking career. He is currently seeking international co-producers and financing for his projects, including his upcoming documentary set to be filmed in Gabon. While his experience at Cannes has been productive in terms of meetings, he has also highlighted the lack of accessibility for visually impaired audience members at the festival screenings.
Yazdan Panah advocates for inclusive cinema through his production company, CineBlind, which aims to promote and produce films that cater to a diverse audience, including those with visual and hearing impairments. He believes that cinema should be accessible to everyone, and hopes to see improvements in providing audio description and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing in film festivals like Cannes. Despite the challenges he faces as a blind filmmaker, Yazdan Panah remains dedicated to creating impactful and inclusive cinema that resonates with audiences worldwide.
