Power Smart 2.0: Revolutionizing Energy Conservation in British Columbia

B.C. Hydro is embarking on a significant initiative to help customers reduce their energy consumption and avoid the need for costly new power generation projects in the future. This initiative, known as Power Smart 2.0, is the largest conservation investment in B.C. Hydro's history. The goal is to assist hundreds of thousands of British Columbians in lowering their energy bills and decreasing their energy usage.

Premier David Eby emphasized the importance of providing practical solutions for residents facing the challenges of global inflation. The Power Smart program aims to make it easier for families and businesses to save on energy costs by offering rebates and incentives. By investing in energy-efficient programs, B.C. Hydro believes that the most cost-effective energy is the energy that is not consumed.

Starting this fall, B.C. Hydro customers with electric baseboard heating can receive free smart thermostats, valued at around $350 each. A new rewards plan will enable residential customers to save up to $200 annually by reducing their energy consumption. Additionally, customers with lower incomes can earn up to $325 through energy-efficient programs. A new mobile app will also be launched to help customers track their energy usage, participate in savings programs, and manage their Hydro accounts.

Customers can benefit from instant rebates on energy-efficient products at over 300 stores across B.C. The ultimate goal of Power Smart 2.0 is to save 800 megawatts of hydro capacity by 2030 and reduce energy consumption by 2,200 gigawatt hours per year, equivalent to powering 220,000 homes. These savings are estimated to avoid $2 billion in infrastructure construction costs and contribute $1.4 billion to GDP growth, supporting 3,500 jobs annually.

The initiative will also benefit commercial and industrial customers, offering savings of up to 100% of eligible costs for energy-saving upgrades and technologies. B.C. Hydro's president and CEO, Charlotte Mitha, highlighted the importance of empowering customers with the tools and support needed to make lasting improvements that benefit both individuals and the broader energy system.

Since its launch in 2008, the original Power Smart program has successfully reduced electricity demand in the province by over 7,500 gigawatt hours annually. For more information on Power Smart 2.0, visit the B.C. Hydro website.
