Following John's passing, Kayce took over the ranch, and he and Monica were still together at the end of the show. However, in the spinoff series, it was revealed that Monica had passed away after battling cancer. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained that Monica's death would be a driving force for Kayce's character development in the new series, guiding him towards a new path.
