Neon River: A Multinational Cinematic Journey

Exciting news for film enthusiasts as the highly anticipated movie Neon River, directed by Karim Aïnouz, is set to begin production in 2027. The film will be a collaboration between production companies from Brazil, Japan, France, and Germany, with Buena Vista International (Brazil) also involved. Based on the novel Favela High-Tech by Marco Lacerda, Neon River follows the story of a young woman of Japanese and Brazilian descent who finds herself in Japan, navigating complex relationships and love interests. The screenplay is a joint effort by Tainá Muhringer Tokitaka, Karim Aïnouz, and Inés Bortagaray.

Gullane, the Brazilian production company behind the project, has been working on bringing Neon River to life for over a decade. The crucial step of finding a Japanese co-producer was recently achieved with the partnership with K2 Pictures, a production and finance company in Japan. The $33 million production fund unveiled by K2 Pictures in Cannes will support the development of Neon River and other projects, including a documentary by Takashi Miike. This collaboration opens up new possibilities for Brazil-Japan co-productions, marking a significant milestone for the industry.

The casting process for Neon River has already begun in Brazil and Japan, signaling the start of production in 2027. Gullane, known for producing Aïnouz's previous work like Motel Destino, praises the director as a visionary in Brazilian cinema. Aïnouz's recent film, Rosebush Pruning, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and showcased his talent for storytelling and visual aesthetics. With Neon River on the horizon, audiences can look forward to a captivating cinematic experience that explores themes of identity, culture, and love in a global context.
