Shibboleth: A Tale of Love and Surrogacy in Cannes

Shibboleth, a new film directed by Alexandra Matheou, has cast Greek actress Mary Mina as its female lead. The movie is part of this year's Focus CoPro at Cannes and follows the story of a surrogate mother who joins the couple expecting her baby on a vacation, leading to a love triangle and emotional challenges. Matheou explores themes of eternal life and the impact of surrogacy on individuals' lives in the film.
Produced by Maria Drandaki's Homemade Films with support from the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture, Shibboleth is currently in the financing and casting stage. The movie is set to be filmed in Cyprus and Greece during the summer of 2027. Matheou will also premiere her short film, Free Eliza (Notes on an Anatomical Imperfection), at the Director's Fortnight, which tells the story of a woman born without the ability to smile and her refusal to conform to societal expectations.
Homemade Films, the production company behind Free Eliza, is also producing the film Titanic Ocean directed by Konstantina Kotzamani. An exclusive clip from Free Eliza, featuring Grigoria Metheniti as Eliza, has been released, showcasing the unique story of a woman navigating a world obsessed with positivity. Stay tuned for more updates on Shibboleth and Free Eliza as they progress towards their premieres.
