Texas Tech Athletics Budget Sees $10 Million Increase for FY 2026: George Strait Concerts and Football Success Drive Revenue Growth

Texas Tech's athletics budget for fiscal year 2026 has seen a significant increase of $10 million, thanks to the efforts of George Strait, Joey McGuire, the Texas Tech football team, and generous donors. The university's fiscal year runs from September 1 to August 31, and the approved operating budget for the current fiscal year started at $164,184,670. Following approval from Regent Tim Culp, an adjustment of up to $10 million was made to the athletics budget, bringing it to approximately $175 million for the year.

The sources of the additional revenue included revenue from the two-night George Strait concerts held at Jones AT&T Stadium, income from Tech football's participation in the Big 12 championship game and the College Football Playoff, as well as contributions from donors. The success of these initiatives led to the need for a budget adjustment, which was approved by the Board of Regents during their May 7 meeting in Lubbock. The increase in revenues was matched by a corresponding increase in expenditures to maintain a balanced budget.

In comparison to previous years, Tech reported $145.3 million in total operating revenue and $144.4 million in total operating expenses for fiscal year 2025. The George Strait concerts, which drew a combined attendance of 133,065, were a major revenue generator for the university. The success of the concerts exceeded expectations, with merchandise sales and concessions performing exceptionally well.

Tech's efforts to explore new revenue streams led to the decision to host concerts at Jones AT&T Stadium, with the hope of generating additional income for the athletics department. The success of the George Strait concerts has opened up possibilities for future events, with discussions underway for potential acts in 2027. The university is considering various factors, such as timing, weather, and artist selection, to ensure the success of future concerts.

The increase in the athletics budget reflects the university's commitment to enhancing its programs and facilities, with the support of key stakeholders and successful revenue-generating initiatives. The success of the George Strait concerts has not only provided a significant financial boost but has also paved the way for future opportunities to engage with the community and generate additional revenue for Texas Tech athletics.
