Imax Explores Potential Sale Amid Record Box Office Success and Future Film Slate

Imax is currently exploring the potential of a sale, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, and has reached out to potential buyers in the entertainment industry. The process is still in its early stages and may not lead to a final agreement. Following the report, Imax's shares surged by over 10% on Thursday. Imax has been a key player in the rising popularity of large-screen cinema experiences, contributing to the success of recent blockbusters like Avatar: Fire And Ash and Project Hail Mary.
The company's upcoming slate for 2026 includes The Odyssey, which will be the first theatrical feature filmed entirely with Imax cameras, and Dune: Part Three. In January, Imax announced a global box office gross of $1.28 billion for 2025, marking a 40% increase from the previous year and setting a new record for the company. Imax also achieved its highest-ever gross in North America, with $449 million, as well as in the international markets (excluding China) with $427 million, and in China with $407 million.
During an investors meeting in December, Imax CEO Rich Gelfond emphasized the company's value in the premium format sector as the trend continues to grow. Gelfond highlighted Imax's potential as a standalone publicly traded entity or as part of a larger organization that can unlock even greater value and expand its global business reach. Imax has not yet provided any official comments on the potential sale.
