Legal Battle Ensues After Tragic Caravan Fire at Suffolk Glampsite

A tragic incident occurred at a glampsite in Suffolk in July 2022, where a barrister named Ruth Pingree lost her life while saving her children from a caravan fire. Her husband, Roland Pingree, has filed a lawsuit against the glamping company, Happy Days Retro Vacations, seeking over £200,000 in damages. He claims that the faulty smoke alarm in the caravan failed to alert his wife in time, costing her precious seconds that could have saved her life.

The family was staying in a vintage Airstream caravan named 'Betsy' at the glampsite, equipped with safety measures like a smoke and carbon monoxide detector, a fire blanket, and a small fire extinguisher. On the night of the incident, they were socializing with friends around a fire pit, and the owner of the site conducted a security check after everyone had left. Unfortunately, a fire started near the caravan, trapping Mrs. Pingree inside as her husband and children managed to escape.

The coroner's inquest revealed that the fire may have been caused by embers from the fire pit, exacerbated by dry and windy conditions. Mr. Pingree, awakened by his children, tried to rescue his wife but was unable to due to the intense smoke. The late barrister was described as a remarkable person by her family, known for her warmth, kindness, and devotion to her loved ones.

In his lawsuit, Mr. Pingree alleges that the glampsite's risk assessment was inadequate and that no safety assessment was conducted regarding the flammability of certain materials on the premises. The glamping company, in its defense, denies liability for Mrs. Pingree's death, stating that their safety measures were appropriate and in line with government guidelines. They also dispute the claim that the smoke alarm malfunctioned, citing regular checks and maintenance of the detector.

The tragic incident led to the permanent closure of the glampsite where the fire occurred. The legal proceedings between Mr. Pingree and Happy Days Retro Vacations will continue in court, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled unless a settlement is reached beforehand. The lawsuit highlights the importance of safety measures in such accommodations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
