Mount Everest's Record-Breaking Climbing Season: 274 Climbers Reach Summit in a Single Day

Mount Everest saw a remarkable achievement as a record-breaking 274 climbers successfully reached the summit in a single day. The climbers capitalized on the favorable weather conditions on Wednesday, making it the highest number of successful ascents on the popular southern route in Nepal. The peak can be approached from either Nepal or China's Tibet, with the Nepalese side witnessing 223 climbers on May 22, 2019, while the Chinese side remains closed this year.
Renowned mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa made history by conquering Everest for the 32nd time, surpassing his own previous record. Pasang Dawa Sherpa also achieved a milestone by reaching the summit for the 30th time, while Lakpa Sherpa set a new record for female climbers with her 11th successful ascent. The climbing season this year started late due to safety concerns related to a large serac on the route to the summit.
With approximately 494 climbers and an equal number of Sherpa guides expected to attempt the ascent by the end of the month, this year's Everest climbing season is in full swing. Since the historic first ascent by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, thousands of climbers have challenged themselves on the world's highest peak. The spirit of adventure and determination continues to draw climbers from around the globe to test their limits on Mount Everest.
