The Music of Elton: A Tribute to the Iconic Performances of Elton John and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
In the late 1980s, the iconic British pop-rock star Elton John embarked on his 'Tour De Force' in Australia, captivating audiences with his energetic performances and timeless hits. The tour, which included 26 shows, featured a unique format with two distinct halves. The first set showcased Elton's classic hits performed with his band, while the second half saw him collaborating with the 88-piece Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, donning a Mozart-inspired look.
Fast forward forty years, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is paying homage to Elton John's groundbreaking performances with 'The Music of Elton'. This tribute event, taking place over four nights in October at the Hamer Hall, will bring to life some of Elton's most beloved songs. While Elton himself will not be present, singer and pianist Jason Dean and his band, Superband, will be joined by the full orchestra under the musical direction of Chong Lim AM.
Chong Lim AM, a highly respected musical director in Australia, expressed his excitement about revisiting the historic collaboration between rock and classical music. He highlighted the challenge of arranging Elton's iconic songs for an orchestra but emphasized the rewarding experience of adding a new layer of color to lift the music. Prudence Davis, the Principal Flute for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, who was part of the original tour in 1986, shared her fond memories of the groundbreaking performances and the opportunity to tour with the music legend.
Elton John's music, known for its piano-driven melodies and emotional lyrics, lends itself well to orchestral arrangements, as Chong Lim explained. The symphony orchestra's vast sound complements the harmonic chord progressions of Elton's songs, creating an epic musical experience.
