Arctic Script Lab: Nurturing Nordic Talent in Film Storytelling at RIFF Industry Days

Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) has launched the Arctic Script Lab, a development initiative for up-and-coming Nordic screenwriters. The Lab is currently accepting submissions until July 5 and will choose up to eight filmmakers with a first or second feature in the treatment stage. The selected writers will craft narratives inspired by Arctic storytelling traditions and the region's social, cultural, political, or environmental contexts. Renowned Icelandic director Dagur Kari, former head of the Danish Film School’s directing programme, will mentor the participants. The programme will kick off in early August, followed by an in-person workshop at the RIFF Industry Days event from September 30 to October 3.
Supported by the Nordic Culture Fund and developed in collaboration with Greenland’s Nuuk International Film Festival, the Arctic Script Lab aims to nurture emerging talent in the Nordic film industry. In addition to the script development programme, RIFF Industry Days will feature a range of activities such as masterclasses, panels, RIFF Talks, Impact Talks, a Producers Roundtable, Talent Lab, Young Nordic Voices Think Tank, and Work in Progress co-production forum. The 2026 edition of RIFF will shine a spotlight on Portugal as the country in focus. Save the dates for the 2026 RIFF, scheduled to take place from September 24 to October 4.
In conclusion, the Arctic Script Lab offers a unique opportunity for Nordic screenwriters to hone their craft and develop compelling narratives rooted in Arctic storytelling traditions. With mentorship from industry experts and a platform to showcase their work at RIFF Industry Days, participants can gain valuable insights and connections to further their careers in the film industry. Don't miss the chance to be part of this exciting initiative and join the vibrant community of filmmakers at Reykjavik International Film Festival.
