AI-Driven Romance Scam Operation Uncovered in Nonthaburi: Six Nigerian Nationals Arrested

Thai authorities have apprehended six Nigerian nationals in connection with an AI-driven romance scam operation in Nonthaburi, near Bangkok. The suspects were arrested during a raid on luxury condominium units near the Phra Nangklao Bridge. The arrests were made following a previous investigation into cocaine trafficking, where suspicious financial transactions led to the group's riverside residence. During the raid, police found mobile phones, laptops, and bank-related documents, some of which were actively involved in scam conversations.

The group allegedly used AI-generated images and fake video calls to pose as professionals like pilots, US military personnel, doctors, and engineers to target older Thai women. They would then deceive their victims into fraudulent relationships and request money for fabricated fees like customs clearance. The suspects, who were in Thailand on student visas without legitimate employment, are facing charges for immigration violations and unlawful association. Further fraud-related charges are expected as the investigation progresses.
