Dewayne Blackwell, a renowned songwriter, passed away on May 23, 2021, in Ajijic, Mexico, at the age of 84. He started his songwriting journey in the late 1950s, crafting hits for popular artists such as The Fleetwoods, Bobby Vinton, and the Everly Brothers. Transitioning to Nashville in the 1970s, Blackwell ventured into country music and co-wrote the iconic song "Friends in Low Places" with Garth Brooks, which became a monumental success in the country music genre.
Blackwell's early life saw him drop out of high school and move to Alaska, where he worked as a stevedore and longshoreman while refining his songwriting skills. Returning to California in the late 1950s, he performed and recorded with his family band, The Blackwells, until tragedy struck in 1961 when his brother Ron passed away in a motorcycle accident. Despite this loss, Blackwell's songwriting career continued to flourish.
Throughout the following decades, Blackwell's songs were recorded by various pop artists, including Bobby Vee, Billy Fury, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, and the Everly Brothers.
