Netflix's Oscar Ambitions: Acquiring Cannes Standouts 'Gentle Monster' and 'La Bola Negra

Netflix is in the final stages of acquiring the Cannes Competition film "Gentle Monster" starring Léa Seydoux, with hopes that the Parisian actress could be a contender in the Oscar Best Actress category. This marks Seydoux's first onscreen singing performance. The deal is expected to cover North America, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, with MK2 Films handling the sales at Cannes.
Additionally, Netflix is nearing a $4M-$5M agreement for the film "La Bola Negra" directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, featuring Penélope Cruz. The movie received an extraordinary 20-minute standing ovation at Cannes, fueling Netflix's Oscar ambitions.
In "Gentle Monster," directed by Marie Kreutzer, Seydoux portrays an experimental pianist who moves to the countryside with her family. She grapples with the revelation that her husband Philip (played by Laurence Rupp) has been accused of leading a double life as an online pedophile pornographer, along with his panic attacks. Kreutzer drew inspiration from a real-life case reported in the German newspaper Die Zeit.
Speaking about the film's origins, Kreutzer shared her motivation for tackling such a challenging subject matter and shedding light on the issue of sexual violence against children. The director's personal encounter at a public pool with families further fueled her determination to address the topic through filmmaking.
With the potential acquisition of "Gentle Monster" and "La Bola Negra," Netflix is strategically positioning itself in the Oscar race, showcasing a diverse range of compelling narratives and performances that could resonate with audiences and critics alike.
