Iga Swiatek Dominates Opening Match at 2026 Tournament

Iga Swiatek, the No. 3 seed, started her 2026 campaign with a convincing victory over wildcard Emerson Jones, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour. Jones, a 17-year-old Australian ranked No. 136, was playing her first professional clay-court match, while Swiatek, a clay-court specialist with 10 titles on the surface, dominated the match. Swiatek will face Abu Dhabi champion Sara Bejlek in the next round after Bejlek defeated Sloane Stephens in straight sets.

Swiatek took control of the match early on, winning the first eight points, including a love break. She hit a total of 17 winners, closing out the match with a forehand winner on match point. Jones managed only five winners, but capitalized on Swiatek's errors to break her serve twice. However, Swiatek responded by raising her level of play, winning seven consecutive games to secure the victory.

With this win, Swiatek's record in Grand Slam first rounds improves to 28-1, with her only loss coming at Wimbledon in 2019. On the other hand, Jones, who has yet to win a set in three Grand Slam appearances, faced tough opponents in each tournament. Despite her lack of success in Grand Slam main draws, Jones continues to gain valuable experience on the tour.
