Remembering John Bernard Arnold III: A Community's Tribute to a Magic-Loving Veteran
John Bernard Arnold III faced significant challenges in his life, having lost his mother at a young age and growing up in foster care. Despite his difficult past, he found joy in making people laugh through his passion for magic. With no immediate family to mourn his passing, Terrance O'Keefe of Hanover-Hanson Veteran Services organized a proper farewell for Arnold, calling on the community for support.
The response was overwhelming, with hundreds of people showing up to pay their respects at Arnold's service. Veterans saluted his casket in unison, and the priest shared anecdotes about Arnold's love for classical music, chocolate cake, and even the TV show "Grey's Anatomy." Despite Arnold's request for a simple Catholic Mass without a eulogy, attendees felt a connection to him through these personal details.
As Arnold was laid to rest under a clear sky, bagpipes played and a gun salute honored his service. The flag from his casket was presented to the caretaker of the veterans home where he spent his final years. In a heartwarming turn of events, Arnold's great-nephew, Joe Durban, learned of his passing and traveled to Massachusetts to receive the flag and visit his relative's grave, bringing closure to Arnold's story.
Although Arnold may not have sought a grand send-off, the community's outpouring of support ensured that he was remembered and honored by 1,500 individuals. In death, Arnold found a family in the community that came together to celebrate his life and service.
