Washington State Baseball Team Secures NCAA Regional Tournament Spot with Dominant Performance

The Washington State baseball team secured a spot in the NCAA regional tournament by defeating San Diego State 14-4 in the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Despite being predicted to finish eighth in the preseason poll, WSU finished second in the regular season and earned the conference's automatic bid. The Cougs needed just one win to clinch the tournament after beating San Diego State on Saturday.

In the championship game against San Diego State, the Cougs started strong with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Ryan Priest RBI double. The Aztecs quickly tied the game in the first inning, but WSU responded with key hits to take a 6-4 lead by the fifth inning. A late offensive surge in the seventh inning, including a three-run home run by Max Hartman, sealed the victory for Washington State.

Gavin Roy was named the Mountain West Tournament MVP, and head coach Nathan Choate led the team to its first NCAA regional appearance in 16 years. The Cougs now await the College Baseball Selection Show to learn their regional destination. With a 30-26 overall record, WSU will rely on ace pitcher Nick Lewis to start their regional game.

The NCAA regionals are set to begin on May 29, and Washington State is eager to make a strong showing after their impressive tournament victory.
