Dracula 1958: Hammer Films Unveils 4K Restoration with Lost Footage

Hammer Films is preparing to unveil a new 4K restoration of the classic 1958 horror film Dracula, featuring previously unseen footage that has been lost for over six decades. This restored version includes more than three minutes of material that had only been shown in the original Japanese theatrical release in 1958. The recovered footage, never before seen in the UK or US, has been integrated back into the film by Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration, in collaboration with Warner Bros. The restored Dracula will hit theaters and home entertainment in October, just in time for Halloween, with a UK theatrical release on at least 70 screens through John Gore Studios-owned Icon.
Dracula, a pivotal film in the horror genre, stars Peter Cushing as Professor Van Helsing and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, marking their second on-screen collaboration. The movie faced censorship in the UK and US upon its initial release due to its violent and sensual content, resulting in over three minutes of footage being cut. Written by Jimmy Sangster and directed by Terence Fisher, Dracula's gothic storytelling, visual style, practical effects, and atmospheric sound set a standard for Hammer horror films.
John Gore Studios, which acquired Hammer Films in 2023 and Silver Salt Restoration in 2024, has been dedicated to restoring and preserving the Hammer brand. Following the successful 4K restoration of The Curse Of Frankenstein in 2021, the studio has released deluxe box sets of Hammer titles, catering to collectors with bonus features like interviews, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes content. CEO John Gore emphasized the significance of bringing Dracula back to audiences in 4K, highlighting the film's enduring impact and the reunion of Lee and Cushing on screen in stunning detail. This restoration not only revives a piece of British film history but also reaffirms the timeless appeal of this iconic horror classic.
