Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate Files Complaint Against Incumbent Mayor for Alleged Election Law Violation

A complaint has been filed by Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass for allegedly violating election laws by campaigning near a ballot drop box during early voting. The complaint accuses Bass of illegal electioneering by soliciting votes and holding signs near a polling place, which is prohibited within 100 feet of voting locations.
The complaint argues that Bass's actions show a reckless disregard for the rule of law and the democratic process. According to Los Angeles election law, campaign activities such as soliciting votes, displaying campaign materials, and speaking to voters about how to cast their ballots are prohibited within 100 feet of polling places, ballot drop boxes, or elections offices.
The Bass campaign denies any election law violation, stating that the video in question was filmed at two separate locations approximately 200 feet apart. They claim that the portion featuring campaign signs was shot in the middle of the park, while the second location showed the ballot drop box. The allegations arose from a campaign video posted a week before the June primary election, where Bass was seen thanking supporters as they submitted ballots into a drop box.
The City Clerkâs Office has not publicly responded to the complaint yet, and further comments are awaited from them. The controversy highlights the importance of adhering to election laws and regulations to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process in Los Angeles.
