BEAT: Revisiting King Crimson's Iconic Albums with Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, and More on European Tour

In 2024, a group of talented musicians joined forces to perform music from three iconic King Crimson albums, and they are now set to tour Europe. Guitarist Steve Vai, along with former King Crimson members Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, and Tool drummer Danny Carey, formed the band BEAT to revisit the albums Discipline, Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair.

Steve Vai shared his introduction to King Crimson through his friend John Sergio, who introduced him to progressive rock with the first King Crimson record. Vai was particularly drawn to the albums Discipline, Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair for their intricate guitar work, unique use of guitar synthesizers, complex arrangements, and beautiful melodies.

When Adrian Belew approached Steve Vai about joining BEAT, Vai's initial concern was whether Robert Fripp, the original King Crimson guitarist, approved of the project. Once Belew confirmed Fripp's support and even suggested the band's name, Vai embraced the challenge of playing the complex music of King Crimson.

Vai acknowledged the difficulty of replicating Robert Fripp's guitar parts but found guidance in a transcription book provided by former Crimson guitarist Trey Gunn. While Vai made minor adjustments to suit his style on some pieces, he strived to stay true to Fripp's original compositions.

Despite the success of the BEAT concept and the addition of extra tour dates, the band members are considering the possibility of creating new music. However, Vai recognizes the challenges of balancing his commitments to BEAT and his solo projects, including a solo acoustic guitar and vocal record and four orchestral records.

As BEAT prepares for their European tour starting in Wolverhampton on June 7 and concluding in Bari, Italy, on July 3, fans can visit the BEAT website for tour dates and ticket information.
