Introducing Affordable Intercity Shuttle Trains: Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit's Latest Venture

Indian Railways is all set to complete its Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit in Telangana, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023. The project, costing over Rs 500 crore, will produce various types of rolling stock, including coaches and trainsets. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the plans for the unit, which aims to manufacture 200 intercity trains in the next five years. These trains will serve short-distance travel with multiple stops, catering to students, commuters, and the general public.
The Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit will introduce new intercity trains that will operate as shuttle services connecting nearby towns and cities across the country. These trains are expected to offer an affordable option for short-distance intercity travel, potentially shifting a significant amount of local traffic from roads to railways. Equipped with modern features like automatic door closing, superior ventilation, and a safe coach design, the trains will have a 20-coach configuration with two toilets in each coach.
The new intercity trains will feature modern jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies to enhance passenger comfort and ride quality. Designed to operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph, the trains will also incorporate regenerative braking technology, making them energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions compared to road transport, promoting a greener mode of transportation for passengers.
