CMAT Speaks Out Against Body Shaming: Addressing Online Abuse and Advocating for Self-Acceptance

Irish singer-songwriter CMAT recently addressed the ongoing abuse she has faced regarding her body and weight after her performance at BBC’s Radio 1 Big Weekend. In a post on Instagram, CMAT, whose real name is Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, expressed her frustration with the constant criticism she receives about her appearance. She highlighted the disparity in treatment between herself and other female artists on the same lineup, such as Zara Larsson and Olivia Dean, who did not face the same level of online abuse.

CMAT shared a Substack essay by a music fan known as Front Row Feels, which resonated with her experience of being unfairly targeted for her body size. She emphasized that her appearance is not a choice and that she faces challenges in changing it to conform to societal standards. Despite her success, CMAT admitted that the constant scrutiny and criticism have tarnished her enjoyment of her achievements, as she feels pressured to meet unrealistic expectations.

The singer-songwriter's album Take a Sexy Picture of Me, released last year, delves into the issue of body image and the scrutiny women face. CMAT is currently on tour promoting her third album Euro-Country, with a sold-out headline show in Dublin. Despite the challenges she faces, CMAT remains determined to speak out against body shaming and advocate for self-acceptance and respect for all individuals, regardless of their appearance.
