USC 2026 Season Opener: Weather Challenges and Game Preview
The Big Ten conference recently unveiled USC's 2026 regular season schedule, which includes 12 games featuring both non-conference and Big Ten matchups against teams like Ohio State, Michigan, and Indiana. The kickoff times and networks for the first four games of the season were also announced in May. The Trojans will start their home defense at the Coliseum on Aug. 29 against the San José State Spartans at 12 p.m. PT on NBC. Despite the game being seen as a tuneup for USC, the late August heat in Los Angeles could impact the season opener due to the city's unique weather patterns.
Coastal cities like Los Angeles experience a seasonal lag, with the Pacific Ocean taking time to warm up, resulting in "June Gloom." By August, the land absorbs maximum heat, leading to the hottest temperatures of the year. AccuWeather predicts temperatures as high as 85 degrees for the Week 0 game. Fortunately, USC plays on natural grass, which doesn't add extra heat like artificial turf fields.
In the past, USC has faced scorching temperatures during late August home season-openers. In 2022, the game against Rice saw temperatures reaching 95 degrees at kickoff. With the upcoming game scheduled for 12 p.m. PT, there is a chance the Trojans could avoid the peak heat of the day. Fans are advised to come prepared with hydration, sunscreen, and shade to stay comfortable during the game.
The Trojans have a perfect 6-0 record against SJSU in their previous matchups. Their most recent meeting in 2023 resulted in a 56-28 victory for USC. Former quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Tahj Washington led the offense, while cornerback Jaylin Smith and defensive end Jamil Muhammad stood out on defense. USC fans can look forward to an exciting start to the season as the Trojans aim to continue their winning streak against SJSU.
