Newark Implements Curfew Near Delaney Hall After Violent Protest

A strict curfew has been imposed in the vicinity of Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, following a protest that turned violent. The Newark Police Department and New Jersey State Police had to intervene as a group of protestors engaged in aggressive actions, breaching designated protest zones and endangering both law enforcement and peaceful demonstrators. The protestors reportedly attacked police barricades, threw projectiles, used barriers as weapons, and set tires on fire, prompting immediate police action.
Multiple individuals have been arrested and found with weapons during the protests, leading to concerns about public safety and the treatment of detainees at Delaney Hall. In response to the escalating situation, Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced a mandatory curfew in the area surrounding the immigration detention center to ensure public safety. Violators will be warned to leave the area, with non-compliance resulting in removal, summonses, and potential legal action.
Despite the violent turn of events, officials commended the peaceful protestors who have been shedding light on the conditions at Delaney Hall. Attorney General Jennifer Davenport emphasized the state's commitment to working with the administration to ensure humane treatment of detainees. Protests and counter-protests are ongoing outside the ICE detention center, with state police redirecting demonstrators away from the building to prevent conflicts with ICE agents.
Governor Mikie Sherrill reiterated the administration's focus on advocating for better conditions for detainees and their families, as well as the closure of Delaney Hall. Law enforcement will maintain a presence around the facility to de-escalate tensions and facilitate peaceful protests. The goal is to protect both the protestors and the detainees while advocating for improved conditions and ultimately the closure of the detention center.
