Peter Mandelson Vetting Process: Cabinet Office Withholds Crucial Document Amid Ongoing Investigation
The Cabinet Office has decided not to release a crucial document related to Peter Mandelson's vetting process due to concerns raised by the police that it could impact the ongoing investigation into the disgraced peer. The document, a nine-page summary compiled by the UK Security Vetting Agency (UKSV) before Mandelson's appointment as the British ambassador to the US, was set to be part of the second batch of files concerning Mandelson's case. However, the Metropolitan Police advised against making certain documents public to avoid compromising the investigation and potential prosecution of Mandelson in the future.
The police spokesperson emphasized the importance of following due process to ensure that the criminal investigation is not jeopardized. They mentioned that they are collaborating with the Cabinet Office to review relevant documents provided to them. Despite the government's obligation to comply with the Humble Address, the police have requested that some documents not be made public to safeguard the integrity of the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
Peter Mandelson, who was arrested in February, remains under active investigation following allegations that he shared sensitive government information with Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure under Gordon Brown's administration. Earlier this month, the Cabinet Office announced that the intelligence and security committee (ISC) had agreed to redact certain portions of the summary document for publication as part of the Mandelson files. In April, Sir Olly Robbins, a senior civil servant in the foreign office, was removed from his position after it was revealed that Mandelson had been denied security clearance in a confidential vetting process.
In March, Mandelson demanded a £547,201 payout for the remainder of his term as the UK ambassador to the US after being dismissed, as indicated by official records.
