Remembering Joe Negri: The Musical Legacy of Handyman Negri from 'Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood

Joe Negri, the beloved Handyman Negri from the iconic show "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood," has passed away at the age of 99, just before his 100th birthday. He was a prominent figure in Pittsburgh, known for his musical talents and role on the show. For over three decades, children across the country watched him as Handyman Negri in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, even though he admitted he wasn't handy in real life.

Despite not being skilled at fixing things, Negri excelled in playing the guitar. He eventually ran "Negri's Music Shop" on the show, where he had the opportunity to perform with renowned musicians like Wynton Marsalis and Yo-Yo Ma. Music was his true passion, and he dedicated his life to it. Born in Pittsburgh in 1926, Negri started performing on the radio at a young age and later transitioned to playing the guitar.

In the 1950s, Negri and his trio appeared on "The Buzz and Bill Show" on KDKA-TV, followed by other performances on various shows in the following decades. However, it was in 1968 when Fred Rogers created the role of Handyman Negri specifically for him on "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood," a role he portrayed for nearly 35 years. Negri also shared his musical knowledge by teaching jazz guitar at several universities for almost 50 years.

Joe Negri's impact on television and music education has left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for years to come. His contributions to the world of music and children's television will always be cherished and celebrated.
