Academy Marquee Theater List: Celebrating Excellence in Movie Theaters Worldwide

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the launch of the Academy Marquee Theater List, set to debut in the spring of 2027 in celebration of the Academy's 100th anniversary. This initiative aims to recognize exceptional movie theaters that offer outstanding audience experiences, preserve cinematic history, and serve as cultural hubs in their communities. The inaugural list will feature 50 theaters, with 25 from the U.S. and 25 from international locations.

Movie theaters seeking recognition on the Academy Marquee Theater List can apply for eligibility through a structured application process. A committee of Academy members, representing various branches of the organization and without vested interests in theaters, will select the top theaters based on their merits. The final selections will be subject to approval by the Academy's Board of Governors.

The criteria for eligibility include operating as brick-and-mortar theaters year-round and showcasing either first-run films or repertory screenings. The selected theaters will be showcased on the Academy's digital platforms, such as its website and social media channels, and will receive a physical certification to display in their lobbies.

Interested theaters can submit their applications for consideration, with a maximum of 10 theaters from the same chain or owner allowed in a single submission cycle. The application process is currently open, with a deadline set for Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 5pm PT. There is a submission fee based on a tiered schedule: Early submissions from June 1 to June 30 cost $250, regular submissions from July 1 to July 3 cost $350, and late submissions from August 1 to August 25 cost $450.

The Academy Marquee Theater List is a significant step towards celebrating the art of moviegoing and recognizing the vital role that theaters play in bringing communities together through the magic of cinema. It is a testament to the Academy's commitment to honoring the best movie theaters worldwide and fostering unity within the global film industry.
