Highlights from the 2022 German Film Awards: Sound Of Falling, Yellow Letters, and More

Mascha Schilinski's film "Sound Of Falling" was the big winner at this year's German Film Awards, taking home the Golden Lola for best film and nine other awards in various categories. The film had been a favorite with 11 nominations and now shares the record for most awards with two other films. Another notable winner was İlker Çatak's "Yellow Letters," which received the Silver Lola for best film. Simon Verhoeven's "Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke" won the Bronze Lola and also received the Lola for best supporting actor.

The ceremony also honored Senta Berger with the Lola for best lead actress, marking her first nomination for a German Film Award in her long career. Other winners included Julia Lemke and Anna Koch's "Circusboy" for best children's film and Sabine Lidl's "Siri Hustvedt - Dance Around The Self" for best documentary. The evening also saw awards for lead performances, visual effects, and the presentation of the Bernd Eichinger Award to Thomas Wöbke and Philipp Trauer.

Despite some technical difficulties during the ceremony, the audience showed appreciation for Christian Friedl's hosting skills. Berlinale director Tricia Tuttle received a standing ovation in her honor, and Wim Wenders was recognized with the Honorary Lola for his contributions to German cinema. Wenders used his acceptance speech to reflect on his career and address the evolving sensitivities around cinematic heritage, highlighting the importance of discussing these issues with the younger generation of filmmakers.
