Jimi Hendrix Way Unveiling: Honoring a Music Legend and Inspiring Education

A legendary New York City block that has housed Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios since 1970 will now be known as "Jimi Hendrix Way." The unveiling of the new street sign will take place on June 10th at the corner of 6th Avenue and West 8th Street in Greenwich Village, near the iconic recording studio. This event will also mark the launch of a national education partnership with TeachRock, offering free lessons that use music and popular culture to teach various subjects.
The street renaming initiative was led by NYC District 2 Council Member Harvey Epstein and Experience Hendrix, L.L.C., the Hendrix family-owned company. The ceremony will feature Janie Hendrix, Jeff Slate, Stevie Van Zandt, Vernon Reid, Valerie Simpson, Felicia Collins, Eddie Kramer, and local TeachRock educators and students. The collaboration with TeachRock includes a new curriculum focusing on Hendrix's impact on rock music and creative identity.
The multimedia curriculum, titled "Jimi Hendrix: Rock's Trailblazing Innovator and Influential Guitarist," explores Hendrix's journey and revolutionary impact on music. It includes exclusive archival footage, expert interviews, and interactive tools for students to experiment with Hendrix's signature sound. The lesson is now available in TeachRock's free curriculum library.
Harvey Epstein expressed pride in honoring Jimi Hendrix's legacy, highlighting his influence on music and social justice. Stevie Van Zandt emphasized the importance of inspiring students with Hendrix's creativity and limitless possibilities. Janie Hendrix emphasized the power of music in connecting young people with history and creativity.
The co-naming ceremony for Jimi Hendrix Way in NYC on June 10th, 2026, will celebrate the iconic musician's legacy and impact on music education.
