Revealing the Dark Side of Fame: Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli's Struggles with Substance Abuse on the Set of One Day at a Time

Mackenzie Phillips, a former child actor, recently revealed details about her past struggles with substance abuse during her time on the hit sitcom One Day at a Time. Phillips disclosed that she and her co-star Valerie Bertinelli used cocaine together on set, sharing stories of their drug use during lunch breaks and in the dressing room. Despite Bertinelli's more controlled relationship with drugs, Phillips acknowledged her own addiction and the consequences she faced as a result.

One Day at a Time, which aired from 1975 to 1984, featured Phillips and Bertinelli as teenage sisters Julie and Barbara Cooper. Phillips' substance abuse issues led to her being fired from the show twice, while Bertinelli has been open about her own struggles with drugs over the years. Bertinelli attributed her drug use to her tumultuous relationship with ex-husband Eddie Van Halen, which ultimately ended in divorce in 2007.

In her memoir Losing It, Bertinelli recounted how cocaine was present at her wedding to Van Halen, highlighting the destructive nature of their relationship. Van Halen passed away in 2020 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind his son Wolfgang Van Halen. Wolfgang expressed his grief over his father's death and the impact it had on him personally and professionally.

If you or someone you know is dealing with substance abuse issues, it is important to seek help. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline is available at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for support and guidance.
