NIH Researchers Accused of Smuggling Monkeypox Virus: A Violation of Border Safety Laws

Two foreign researchers working for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have been accused of smuggling vials of the monkeypox virus into the United States and providing false information to border officials. Vincent Munster and Claude Kwe, who work at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Montana, were arrested at Detroit Metro Airport earlier this year. The incident occurred after they arrived on a flight from the Republic of Congo, a country experiencing a monkeypox outbreak. The researchers claimed the vials were for diagnostic purposes, but a search revealed otherwise. The FBI has tested 20 vials so far, confirming that the virus was deactivated. Despite this, bringing biological materials into the country without authorization is illegal and risky. The investigation involved multiple federal agencies, and officials stressed that researchers are not exempt from border safety laws. If convicted, Munster and Kwe could face up to five years in prison.
