Sydney Sweeney to Star and Produce Modern 'Barbarella' Adaptation at Sony Pictures: A Sci-Fi Classic Reimagined
Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in “Euphoria,” is set to star in and produce a modern adaptation of the sci-fi classic “Barbarella” at Sony Pictures and TriStar. The project is based on the French comic by Jean Claude Forest and the 1968 film featuring Jane Fonda. Director Edgar Wright was previously attached to the project, with a script by Jane Goldman and Honey Goldman. Despite a lack of recent updates, Deadline confirms that the film is still in development.
Sweeney has established her own production company, Honey Trap, which has secured a first-look deal with Sony. This partnership ensures that the new “Barbarella” project is progressing forward, with Sweeney actively involved in its development. The original story follows a futuristic female astronaut on a mission to thwart an evil scientist, Dr. Durand Durand, and his galaxy-threatening invention.
“Barbarella” is renowned for its provocative themes, psychedelic visuals, and playful atmosphere. Jane Fonda, who portrayed the titular character in the original film, has expressed reservations about a potential remake. Despite Fonda's concerns, the project continues to move ahead with Sweeney at the helm.
