Book-to-Screen Success: A Look at the UK-Ireland Box Office in Q1 2026

The UK-Ireland box office experienced a 6% increase year-on-year, reaching £199.3m in the first quarter of 2026. The surge was driven by successful book-to-screen adaptations like Sony's Project Hail Mary and Entertainment Film Distributors' The Magic Faraway Tree. Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir's novel, emerged as the top-grossing release in the region with £27.1m, while The Magic Faraway Tree, inspired by Enid Blyton, led as the highest-grossing UK independent release, earning £11.6m. In comparison, the top-grossing film in the same period in 2025 was Universal's Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, with £46.2m.
During the first quarter of 2026, six out of the top 10 films at the UK-Ireland box office were book-to-screen adaptations, including titles like Warner Bros' Wuthering Heights, Universal's Hamnet, and Sony's Crime 101. This marked a shift from the previous year, where sequels and franchise films dominated the top 10 releases. The market share of UK independent films also saw a significant increase of 14.4% year-on-year, compared to 10.7% in 2025. The BFI's definition of an independent film excludes those with major US studio involvement, such as Hamnet, which was fully financed by Universal-owned Focus Features.
In terms of cinema admissions, the UK saw a total of 30.2 million admissions in Q1 2026, a 7% increase from the previous year. This marked the first time since 2020 that Q1 admissions exceeded 30 million. The genre that dominated the UK box office in Q1 2026 was drama, accounting for 23% of the total box office, a significant increase from the previous year. March stood out as a particularly strong month for admissions, with a 45% year-on-year increase, driven by the success of Project Hail Mary.
It is worth noting that the BFI's box office reporting does not include cinema releases of Netflix-produced titles. In Q1 2026, two Netflix-produced films, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man and The Swedish Connection, had a theatrical release in the UK-Ireland region. This was a change from Q1 2025, where there were no Netflix releases. Overall, the first quarter of 2026 showcased a diverse range of films driving box office success, with book adaptations and independent films making a significant impact on the UK-Ireland market.
