Quentin Tarantino's Review: 'The Rip' Shines in a Sea of Mediocrity

Quentin Tarantino recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of Hollywood movies, criticizing the lack of originality and quality in many recent releases. He finds it challenging to watch new films without being overly critical of their flaws and shortcomings. Despite this, Tarantino did find one movie that captured his attention and impressed him: "The Rip," a crime drama on Netflix directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film's unique premise and execution, along with a stellar cast and screenplay, managed to hold Tarantino's interest throughout its duration.
Tarantino acknowledged that while he has enjoyed some movies in recent years, such as "West Side Story" and "Horizon: An American Saga," nothing has truly captivated him like films did in the past. He expressed a preference for reading books over watching movies in the current landscape of Hollywood productions. However, "The Rip" stood out to him as a suspenseful and well-crafted cop thriller that delivered on multiple levels, from direction to performances to cinematography.
Currently, Tarantino is working on a play titled "The Popinjay Cavalier," a swashbuckling comedy set in 1930s Europe, scheduled to premiere on London's West End in 2027. While he has not announced his final film project before retiring from filmmaking, Tarantino's appreciation for "The Rip" demonstrates that there are still movies capable of captivating even the most discerning of audiences. "The Rip" is now available for streaming on Netflix.
