Reviving the Iconic Village Theatre: A Beacon of Hope for UCLA Students and Westwood Village

The closure of the Regency-operated Village and Bruin theaters in Westwood Village has left many UCLA students like recent graduate Brooke McCree with limited moviegoing options. However, there is hope for the Village Theatre, which recently hosted the Los Angeles debut of Billie Eilish and James Cameron’s concert film, “Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour,” signaling a revival led by the Village Directors Circle, a group of prominent filmmakers who purchased the theater in 2024.
The $25-million restoration project for the Village Theatre includes plans for a restaurant, bar, gallery, and a multipurpose space in the lobby, with American Cinematheque set to operate the theater and host special screenings and events. The theater's reopening is eagerly anticipated by many UCLA students, who see it as a potential new community space in the college town of Westwood.
Originally opened in 1931 as part of the Fox Theatres chain, the Westwood Village Theatre has a rich history as a premiere destination in Los Angeles. Despite facing challenges from multiplexes and changing moviegoing trends over the years, the theater has remained a cultural landmark in the neighborhood. With the support of Hollywood directors and a planned renovation, the theater aims to once again become a hub for film enthusiasts and students in the area.
As the theater undergoes renovations and prepares for its reopening, the surrounding community, including UCLA students, looks forward to the return of a beloved entertainment venue. The Village Theatre's legacy as a historic landmark and premiere destination in Westwood continues to shape its future as a vital cultural hub in Los Angeles.
