Box Office Report: Scary Movie Sequel Dominates Opening Weekend, Masters of the Universe Falls Short

The latest installment in the "Scary Movie" franchise had a stellar opening weekend, raking in $55 million domestically, making it the best debut for a Paramount comedy and the top comedy launch since "22 Jump Street" in 2014. The film also performed well internationally, adding $50.5 million to its total, bringing its global debut to $105.5 million, surpassing the opening of "Scream 7" earlier this year.
On the other hand, Amazon MGM Studios' "Masters of the Universe" had a lackluster start with only $29.3 million in the domestic box office and an additional $25 million overseas. With a production budget of $170 million, the film's $54.3 million global debut fell short of expectations, with exit polls indicating a lack of interest from teenagers and kids, while men over 45 showed up to watch.
YouTubers turned filmmakers dominated the third through fifth spots at the box office, with "Backrooms" and "Obsession" battling it out for third and fourth place, each earning just over $25 million for the weekend. "Backrooms" is expected to drop 68% in its second weekend, while "Obsession" is only decreasing by 7% in its fourth weekend. Fathom Events' "Amazing Digital Circus" debuted in fifth place with $12.7 million.
Meanwhile, "Michael" has reached a total of $898 million worldwide, making it Lionsgate's highest-grossing film to date. Universal and Nintendo's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the first studio film to achieve this milestone this year.
