Jafar Panahi: Filmmaker's Legal Battle in Iran's Political Landscape
Jafar Panahi, the renowned Iranian filmmaker and Cannes Palme d’Or winner, has been sentenced to one year in prison for engaging in propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran. His lawyer, Mostafa Nili, revealed that Panahi also received a two-year travel ban and restrictions on joining political and social groups. The Branch 26 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court, under Judge Iman Afshari, upheld the original verdict, citing various reasons for the decision.
The charges against Panahi included creating an “underground and problematic film against the establishment,” supporting political and security prisoners, endorsing protests against the government, advocating for women’s rights, and sharing content in solidarity with lorry drivers’ strikes. In 2022 and 2023, Panahi spent 86 days in Evin Prison on charges of “propaganda against the state”.
