Two individuals from Chicago and New York City were apprehended in New Hartford following an investigation into cryptocurrency fraud. The probe was initiated after a local resident reported falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme involving online cryptocurrency trading and communication. The victim was coerced into transferring significant sums of money to the scheme and was pressured to prepare additional funds under false pretenses.

Authorities discovered that multiple individuals acted as couriers, collecting physical money from the victim on behalf of the fraudulent enterprise. A joint operation involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI was conducted at a local business in New Hartford, resulting in the arrest of Xingxuan Li from Chicago, who was allegedly involved as a courier in the scam.

Further investigation revealed that the organized enterprise facilitated interstate travel for Li to collect over $50,000 from the victim in New Hartford before transporting it out of the area. Xiaohui Lu from New York City was also apprehended for attempting to collect money from the victim after traveling from the city.

Both suspects, Li and Lu, were found to be in the United States under pending asylum status. Any further investigations into their immigration status will be handled by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE. Li and Lu were charged with various offenses and appeared in court for arraignment, with both being released pending future court proceedings.
