Bear Encounter in Old Mammoth Area: Two Individuals and Their Dogs Injured

Two individuals and their dogs were injured in a bear encounter in the Old Mammoth area early Tuesday morning. The incident involved a 17-month-old black bear weighing around 70 pounds. The woman tried to stop the bear from fighting with her dogs, but the bear turned on her, causing injuries. The man intervened, striking the bear with a water bottle and a hatchet to stop the confrontation. Both individuals sustained significant injuries but are expected to recover. The couple's dogs also suffered minor injuries but are expected to fully recover.
The Mammoth Lakes Police Department responded to the scene and confirmed that there was no further threat from the bear. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) took over the investigation and determined the bear to be a threat to public safety, leading to the humane euthanization of the animal. Chief Dan Casabian emphasized the rarity of such incidents in Mammoth Lakes and expressed gratitude for the quick response of law enforcement and medical staff.
Authorities advise residents and visitors to Mammoth Lakes to be cautious around bears and shared tips to reduce the risk of encounters. If encountering a bear, it is recommended to give it space and slowly back away without running. Any aggressive bear behavior should be reported immediately to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department or CDFW.
