BERTHA: Grateful Drag Band Pays Tribute to the Grateful Dead with a Unique Twist

BERTHA: Grateful Drag is a unique seven-piece band from Nashville that pays tribute to the music of the Grateful Dead. The band, known as the "world's first Grateful Dead drag band," brings together queer and allied artists to perform the iconic songs of the Grateful Dead. They will be performing at The Guild Theatre on June 11.

One of the members of BERTHA, Alex Jordan, has roots in San Mateo County and grew up in a musical household. He is a multi-instrumentalist who splits his time between Nashville and the Bay Area. Jordan's latest work includes the roots album "Queen Kerosene," produced by Grammy-winning producer Steve Berlin. He is also working on new live releases and an EP of original songs.

Jordan joined BERTHA through his work with Grateful Guitars, a nonprofit organization supporting musicians and music education. The band invited him to perform with them after he helped set up their gear for a show in Berkeley. Jordan's experience playing with Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir has given him a deep appreciation for their music and unique performance styles.

BERTHA takes its name from the Grateful Dead song "Bertha," and each member has a drag name variation of "Bertha." Jordan plays guitar, piano, and Hammond B3 organ with the band, focusing on the keyboard. The band's setlist varies for each show, and they aim to provide audiences with high-quality music and a carefree, fun experience.

The band supports local organizations through their performances, with the June 11 show benefiting The Billy DeFrank Center LGBTQ+ Center. BERTHA: Grateful Drag promises an evening of high-energy music and entertainment, featuring special guest Empress Astara. Don't miss their performance at The Guild Theatre on June 11 for a night of Grateful Dead classics with a unique twist.
