Sigurjón Sighvatsson to Receive Raimondo Rezzonico Award at 2026 Locarno Film Festival

The 2026 Locarno Film Festival is set to pay tribute to the accomplished film, music video, and TV producer, Sigurjón “Joni” Sighvatsson, who has been instrumental in the creation of several iconic movies and series over the years. Sighvatsson will be honored with the prestigious Raimondo Rezzonico Award during a special ceremony in Locarno, Switzerland, on August 6. The festival will showcase two significant films from his career, including David Lynch’s "Wild at Heart" (1990) and Philippe Parreno and Douglas Gordon’s documentary "Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait" (2006).

Throughout his career, Sighvatsson has made a significant impact on the entertainment industry, co-founding Propaganda Films in 1986, a powerhouse that produced a multitude of music videos in the United States. He has also produced acclaimed films like "Wild at Heart" and "Basquiat" (1996), as well as TV series such as "Twin Peaks" (1990-91) and "Beverly Hills, 90210" (1990-2000). His collaborations with various filmmakers and artists have resulted in cult classics that have influenced a new generation of filmmakers worldwide.

Locarno artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro praised Sighvatsson for his unique approach to producing, which allowed artists like David Lynch and Kathryn Bigelow to express their creativity freely. Sighvatsson's commitment to originality and independence has made him a role model for aspiring filmmakers, showcasing audacity, integrity, creativity, and vision in his work.

The Raimondo Rezzonico Award, presented by the Municipality of Minusio in Switzerland, was established in memory of the former Locarno festival president. The 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival is scheduled to take place from August 5 to 15, offering a platform to celebrate and honor the contributions of industry trailblazers like Sigurjón “Joni” Sighvatsson.
