From Liu Kang to Shang-Chi: Ludi Lin's Journey in Major Franchises

The role of Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was almost played by Ludi Lin, known for his role as Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat 2. Lin confirmed that he auditioned for the role during an interview, but Simu Liu ultimately landed the part. Lin, who has also appeared in Power Rangers and Aquaman, reflected on his journey playing characters in major franchises.
Lin discussed the possibility of a fight between Liu Kang and Shang-Chi, acknowledging the power of the Ten Rings wielded by Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, released in 2021, was a box office success, grossing over $432 million worldwide. The film's director, Destin Daniel Cretton, is set to direct Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer.
A sequel to Shang-Chi is currently in development at Marvel Studios, and Shang-Chi will return in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 2 is already available on Digital and VOD platforms for fans to enjoy.
