Jimi Hendrix Honored with Street Renaming in Greenwich Village

Jimi Hendrix, a legendary musician, spent significant time in New York City's Greenwich Village, where he established Electric Lady, his personal recording studio. Today, a section of West 8th Street has been officially renamed Jimi Hendrix Way in his honor. The street sign was unveiled at the intersection of W 8th and 6th Ave. during a ceremony led by NYC Council Member Harvey Epstein. Originally planned for February 24, the event was rescheduled due to a snowstorm.

Janie Hendrix, Jimi's sister and head of Experience Hendrix LLC, shared that the family had been advocating for the street renaming since Jimi's passing in 1970. The ceremony was attended by notable musicians like Vernon Reid, Valerie Simpson, and Felicia Collins, along with Eddie Kramer, who collaborated closely with Hendrix and played a role in designing Electric Lady. The event also marked the beginning of a partnership with TeachRock, a nonprofit founded by Stevie Van Zandt of the E Street Band.

The renaming of West 8th Street to Jimi Hendrix Way is a fitting tribute to the iconic musician's legacy and his connection to the vibrant music scene of Greenwich Village. The unveiling of the street sign serves as a reminder of Hendrix's enduring impact on music and culture, solidifying his place in the history of New York City and beyond.
