Sir Jeffrey Donaldson Testifies in Court on Sex Abuse Charges: Trial Updates and Allegations

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the DUP, has appeared in court to testify in his trial on sex abuse charges at Newry Crown Court. His defense barrister, Kieran Vaughan KC, called him to give evidence in the ongoing trial, where Sir Jeffrey, aged 63, is facing 18 sex abuse charges dating back to between 1985 and 2008. The trial, now in its third week, involves two alleged victims who reported their allegations to the PSNI in March 2024.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has denied the 18 sex abuse charges, which include acts of gross indecency and indecent assault against Complainant A during her childhood years from 1999 to 2008. The charges also involve allegations of offenses, such as rape, dating back to 1985, against a second woman, Complainant B, when she was also a child. Sir Jeffrey has denied all the allegations brought against him, while his wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, faces five charges of aiding and abetting his alleged offending.

Lady Eleanor Donaldson, who is Sir Jeffrey's wife, is not participating in the trial due to being deemed unfit to face a conventional trial on mental health grounds. She will face a trial of the facts separately. The trial continues to unfold as both Sir Jeffrey and Lady Eleanor Donaldson face the legal proceedings in relation to the sex abuse charges brought against them.
