Alpine's Successful Appeal: Pit-Lane Speeding Penalties in Question at Monaco Grand Prix

Alpine's appeal regarding Pierre Gasly's penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix has been successful, as Formula 1 Management acknowledged an error in the measurement of pit-lane speeding penalties. Gasly received two penalties totaling 10 seconds, which cost him a podium finish. Alpine presented new evidence during the hearing, revealing inaccuracies in the system used to determine speeding violations in the pit lane. This revelation has raised concerns about the reliability of the current system, as several other drivers also received similar penalties.

The process of monitoring pit-lane speeding relies on timing loops that calculate speed based on the time taken to travel a measured distance. Due to the unique driving lines taken by drivers, some competitors were penalized for exceeding the speed limit despite remaining on the speed limiter. A second hearing was scheduled to further address the issue, with a final decision expected on Friday. If Gasly's result is reinstated, it would impact Isack Hadjar's podium finish for Red Bull, and also raises questions about other penalized drivers like George Russell, Oscar Piastri, and Lewis Hamilton.
