Bel: A Tribute to Kenyan-Scottish Singer-Songwriter Beldina Odenyo at EIFF
The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) will conclude with the premiere of Louise Lockwood's documentary feature "Bel," which delves into the life of Kenyan-Scottish singer-songwriter Beldina Odenyo, known as Heir of the Cursed. Odenyo's untimely passing left behind a collection of personal video diaries and original songs, leading her sister and friends on a journey to release her work posthumously. Lockwood, a Glasgow-based director with a background in TV documentaries, presents her first cinematic feature with "Bel," supported by Screen Scotland, the BBC, and the National Theatre of Scotland.
The film, commissioned for broadcast on BBC Two and BBC Scotland, is produced by Sarah Howitt with executive producers John Archer, Nancy Bornat, and Mark Thomas. Notably, Jackie Kay, a renowned novelist, poet, and playwright, serves as an associate producer on the project. Lockwood's personal connection to Odenyo's story through her friendship with Odenyo's sister, Leah, inspired her to bring Bel's talent to a wider audience. The film aims to honor Odenyo's legacy and showcase her exceptional artistry to the world.
