Empowering Marginalized Women: The Journey of the Cool Ladies Club Documentary
A group of women in Mumbai, including domestic workers, community health workers, toilet operators, and home caregivers, embarked on a filmmaking journey to create a documentary about their lives. Under the guidance of filmmaker Shilpi Gulati, they learned the basics of filmmaking and co-directed the movie "Mast Mahila Mandali" or "Cool Ladies Club." The film premiered at Mumbai's Regal theater, showcasing the women's creativity and resilience.
The women's journey began when Supriya Jan from CORO India approached Shilpi Gulati to work on a film project involving marginalized women from the M-east ward. Despite their lack of filmmaking experience, the women were eager to learn and share their stories. Through weekly lessons and exercises, they expanded the film's focus to capture the everyday lives of women like themselves, emphasizing the importance of joy and friendship in the face of challenges.
The documentary, which took six months to film and a year-and-a-half to edit, highlights the women's ability to find moments of self-expression and fun amidst their busy lives. For many of them, the filmmaking experience was transformative, allowing them to rediscover their passions and gain confidence in front of the camera. The film's message of reclaiming joy and camaraderie as acts of resistance resonated with the audience at the premiere.
One of the co-directors, Rehana Shaikh, overcame personal challenges to participate in the project, including negotiating with her husband to appear on screen. Her dance scene in the film became a symbol of empowerment and self-expression, inspiring others to embrace their passions. The women's dedication to the project and their willingness to share their stories have sparked community screenings and potential opportunities for the film to reach wider audiences.
