Global Air Passenger Demand Outlook for 2026: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has projected a slower growth rate for global air passenger demand in 2026 compared to previous years. Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) are expected to increase by 2.1% year-on-year, influenced by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the resulting energy price surge.

The rise in oil prices and fuel costs is anticipated to have a significant impact on the aviation industry and the overall macroeconomic environment. Global GDP growth is forecasted to decrease to around 2.5% in 2026, with inflation potentially reaching 5%, affecting consumers' purchasing power.

In 2026, the Middle East is expected to experience a substantial decline of 11.4% in RPK due to airspace restrictions and operational challenges, leading to a notable decrease in transfer traffic. Africa is projected to have the highest traffic growth at 10.0%, albeit from a lower base compared to other regions.

Asia Pacific is anticipated to contribute the most to global traffic growth, with a 5.1% increase, while Europe is expected to see a 2.8% growth, benefiting from redirected traffic from disrupted Middle Eastern routes. Latin America's traffic is projected to grow by 5.0%, supported by resilient regional economies.

North America's traffic growth is forecasted to be limited to 0.8% due to market maturity and a slowing US economy, particularly in the domestic segment. Despite the challenges, IATA remains optimistic about the industry's adaptability and the continued need for air travel.

Overall, the 2026 passenger outlook indicates a slower but positive growth trajectory, showcasing the aviation industry's resilience in the face of external shocks and travelers' ongoing demand for air transportation.
