Iron Lung: Markiplier's Blood-Soaked Horror Triumph

Markiplier's horror film "Iron Lung" has been a massive success in 2026, grossing $51.2 million after being made for just $3 million. The film, directed by the popular YouTuber, is based on a video game by David Szymanski. It joins the ranks of other successful YouTube-to-theaters adaptations like "Skinamarink," "Obsession," "Backrooms," and "The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act," signaling a shift in the film industry towards new voices and fresh ideas. While most of these films have been created by white male directors, there is potential for more diversity in the future.
The premise of "Iron Lung" is a chilling Lovecraftian tale set on a distant planet. The story follows a half-mad convict named Simon piloting a one-man submarine that descends to the ocean floor. The ocean is filled with blood, and the ground beneath the sub constantly clots, creating a nightmarish setting. Mysterious leviathans lurk in the blood-filled waters, adding to the tension. The rusty sub leaks blood throughout the movie, creating a visually striking and unsettling atmosphere.
Markiplier revealed that "Iron Lung" used a record-breaking amount of stage blood for its production. Nearly 80,000 gallons of blood were employed on set, setting a new cinematic record for the volume of blood used on camera. The blood had to be shipped in semi-trucks and diluted before use, as it was initially very viscous. Markiplier meticulously calculated the set volume and the pressure at which the blood was pumped into it, ensuring a realistic and impactful visual effect.
During the blood-flooding scenes, Markiplier ran the blood pumps for a total of eight hours over a week of filming. Despite this, he conservatively estimated the pumping time as seven hours for his calculations. The sheer amount of blood used in "Iron Lung" surpasses previous records, including Fede Álvarez's 2013 film "Evil Dead," which featured a memorable blood rain sequence. The attention to detail and dedication to creating a unique and immersive experience make "Iron Lung" a standout film in the horror genre.
With its innovative approach to storytelling and visual effects, "Iron Lung" showcases Markiplier's talent as a filmmaker and his commitment to pushing boundaries in the horror genre. The film's success highlights the potential for new voices and diverse perspectives in the industry, paving the way for more groundbreaking projects in the future.
